Question: How much does a Theory Test cost and what do I have to do?

The Theory Test is operated by the Driving Standards Agency, which is a government run organisation, therefore driving instructors and schools have not control over this test.  The current fee is £30.00 and this is reviewed regularly.  The waiting time for a Theory Test date varies from test centre to test centre, but on average the wait is between 2 to 4 weeks.

The Theory Test consists of two parts, multiple choice questions on all aspects of driving and a hazard perception test.  Both parts of the test must be passed otherwise you will fail and have to re-take the whole test again.  The multiple choice question bank has 35 questions that are computer generated and you must get at least 30 right to pass, you are allowed up to 40 minutes to complete.  The hazard perception tests runs 14 video clips that you have to click as quickly as possible on the recognised hazards.  To pass you must recognise 44 out of the 75 hazards.

You must study the Highway Code before taking this test and if you have access to a computer it is recommended that you purchase the latest DSA Driving Test Theory Success CD-Rom which is available at most stationers and software suppliers.  As this is produced by the DSA themselves, it provides the exact exam conditions.  You should aim to pass the exam each time you practice, so that you know that you have reached test standard.
